Choosing a Medical Aid in South Africa

Medshield Medical Aid

Everybody wants to be sure that, should calamity strike or should disease be diagnosed, that they will be able to afford the best possible medical care in the most advanced treatment facilities. Unfortunately, medical treatment is extremely expensive and few people can afford to pay for hospitalization at the best hospitals or treatment from the most eminent medical specialists.

Medshield Medical AidThat is why people have to join medicalaid schemes such as the Medshield Medical Aid, Bonitas Medical Aid or the Discovery Medical Aid: by paying monthly contributions to such a scheme, even when they are healthy, they can rest assured that they will be covered when disaster strikes.

These schemes, and others, all offer a variety of plans that can help the consumer to make adequate provision for top-class medical care when it becomes necessary. The benefits offered by the various plans on offer differ wildly and should be carefully evaluated before making a final decision.

Who is Medshield?

This giant scheme is no novice when it comes to providing quality healthcare to its members. It has been around since 1968 and currently boasts close to two hundred thousand members. It has shown phenomenal growth and is currently the sixth largest scheme is South Africa.

Apart from its long history of serving the South African public, Medshield medical aid also has an excellent financial reputation. In fact, the company enjoys an AA- rating from the Global Credit Rating agency. Members can therefore rest assured that the company has the reserves to honour their claims.

Medshield has embraced technology to provide their members with superior service. They offer online one-on-one consultations with real people!

What plans do Medshield offer?

The scheme offers eight different plans, each one designed to conform to very specific budgets, target markets and individual medical care needs.

  •       There are comprehensive plans that cover both –in and out-of-hospital medical expenses. These plans include the Medivalue Core Plus, the Essential, the Standard and the MediPlus plans, with the Premium Plus and Medibonus Plans catering for different groups of potential members with unique needs.
  •        For those that require more affordable cover Medshield offers potential members with two plans: There are the Medshield Value and the Medshield Core Plus plans. The former provides members with an out-of-hospital benefit of just under two thousand rand while the latter has no out-of-hospital benefits.

Are there any special benefits?

The Medshield medical aid also offers some additional benefits to its members. The most notable of these are as follows:

  •        In 2011 the company established the Medshield pharmacy network. Members are able to experience a “wallet free” experience from these pharmacies when buying medication.
  •        Another innovation from the scheme is the Independent Clinical Oncology Network (or ICON for short). ICON has been established to help those patients suffering from a form of cancer. It includes management programs, counselling and treatment protocols.
  •        Every single member, regardless of the plan chosen, has access to emergency treatment. This is provided in association with the prestigious Europ Assistance South Africa company.
  •        The scheme has several disease management programs in place. These programs are accessible to most members and include chronic conditions such as asthma and diabetes. Special programs for cardiac disease are also in place. These programs involve much more than just treatment; it includes educational programs, advisory services and even round-the-clock support from qualified nurses.
