Selfmed Medical Aid

For more than fifty years, the Selfmed medical aid has been serving the South African public by making affordable medical plans available.

This scheme places a high emphasis on straightforward plans that are easily understandable, that offer no superfluous benefits such as shopping vouchers and discounts at so-called trading partners, believing that such benefits are not real and that they only add costs to the price of medical scheme plans.

What does the scheme offer?

The Selfmed Scheme offers three different plans, as follows:

  1. The Medxxi Plan. This is a straightforward hospital plan aimed at those people that are healthy and young or those that simply cannot afford comprehensive cover but that nevertheless want to cover themselves against the cost of medical emergencies that lead to hospitalization and specialist treatment. The plan does not include cover for the treatment of all chronic diseases or day-to-day medical expenses, although the twenty-six conditions contained in the Minimum Prescribed Benefits list are covered. What it DOES is to offer unlimited cover for hospitalization in any hospital in the country. It also allows for the payment of antenatal classes and a number of procedures that can be done in the consulting rooms of a general practitioner. Members are also entitled to claim the cost of MRI and CT scans if the necessity of such procedures is deemed necessary by a general practitioner.
  2. The Selfmed 80% Plan. This innovative plan will pay eighty percent of all hospital bills while the member will be responsible for the remainder (one-fifth). The plan also offers cover for sixty-five chronic conditions as long as the cost remains less than thirty five thousand rand a year. The plan furthermore offers cover against the cost of treatment for sixty-five different chronic diseases, although the limit if this cover is just under thirty-five thousand rand a year. The plan includes cover for joint replacements, oncology treatment and even biological drugs.
  3. The Selfmed Selfsure Plan. This plan is specifically designed for mature families that have more need for medical treatment on a regular basis. It therefore includes generous day-to-day medical expense cover as well as full and unlimited hospitalization benefits. The plan also includes generous maternity and antenatal benefits. Twenty-six chronic diseases, as specified in the Minimum Benefit list from the Medical Council are naturally also included. Other than many other medical schemes, certain clinical procedures such as gastroscopies, tonsillectomies and colonoscopies are also included in the cover provided. Scans such as MRI and CT are part of the plan too.

Some Additional benefits

All the plans offer cover for joint replacements and treatment for oncology-related diseases. There are limits to this cover, however.

As is the case with some other medical aids, Selfmed has set up a wellness program called the Excellence Centre. The aim is to help members lead healthier lives and to prevent disease from developing in the first place. Selfmed medical aid wants to help their members save money and afford quality health care by limiting costs and by offering plans that address the real needs of their members.  © Medical Aid Plan
