Genesis Medical Scheme
The Genesis Medical Scheme is an
open, medium-sized scheme and can be joined by any South African. The offer reasonable premiums and their plans aim to suit the individual needs and budgets of their members. Measured
in terms of claims ratio and easy access to health practitioners the scheme has been rated as one of the top
five in the country.
What makes Genesis
different?
The scheme advertises itself as being “Different
from the rest”. Skeptics say that are medical schemes are the same and that it is really only the cost and benefits
of the various plans that differ. Yet Genesis claim to be different in several subtle
ways.
One of the most important measures of a healthy
medical scheme is to look at its solvency level. It is this level that indicates the ability of the scheme to pay
claims. The law states clearly that all medical schemes have to maintain a solvency level of at least 25%. Genesis
currently holds reserves of more than two hundred and twenty million rand – four times the required
amount!

Genesis is based in the city of Cape Town but it
is open to all South Africans, regardless of their physical location. Members have free choice regarding the
hospital, doctor or other health practitioner they want to use. Many other schemes require members to make use of a
specific network of service providers.
Main features of Genesis

yearly increases; for the past few years it remained at 5%
- Members have access to any private hospital
in South Africa for contributions as lows as eight hundred rand per month.
- Members are not limited to a specific network
of hospital and health practitioners.
- Members enjoy dentistry benefits of up to
twenty five thousand rand per member per year.
- Genesis offer unusually low contributions for
children.
- The scheme pays hospital deposits before
patients are admitted.
What plans does the scheme
offer?
Genesis offers four straight-forward
easy-to-understand plans:
- The Private Choice
Plan. This is the least expensive plan in the range. It offers
unlimited hospital cover in any private hospital in South Africa and will pay Scale of Benefit rates. It also
provides for dental cover of twenty five thousand rand per annum for each beneficiary. Members are covered for
emergency medical transport and limited hospital cover for a number of major
illnesses.
- The Private
Plan. This plan is very similar to the Private Choice plan, but
members enjoy hospitalization cover at private rates. The plan also makes provision for certain out-of-hospital
medical expenses such as a number of diagnostic scans as well as MRI and CT scans.
- The Private Plus
Plan. This plan offers the same benefits as the Private plan but
the cover is provided at the Genesis Private Rate. Members also have a medical savings plan that allows them to
manage their own day-to-day medical expenses.
- The Private
Comprehensive Plan. This plan is similar to the Private Plus plan
but it is specifically aimed at people that require comprehensive cover for day-to-day medical expenses.
